Reliability and Quality Assurance


Reliability & Quality Assurance Team of ISAC is the nodal entity in formulation of Quality Systems, procedures and guidelines and ensuring their compliance, for the realization of highly reliable Spacecraft Systems. Reliability & Quality Assurance activity is spread across the entire project life cycle and is a continuous process.


The objectives of Reliability & Quality Assurance are:
  • To minimize the number of defects which are undetected at a particular stage and surface at next levels of processes due to deficiencies in the Reliability Assurance Processes
  • To aim for Zero non-conformances in Reliability Assurance Processes
  • To strive for the highest level of customer satisfaction

In order to achieve above objectives, Reliability and Quality Assurance programme comprises of:

Parts, Materials and Process Assurance

  • Qualification and testing of EEE (Electrical, Electronics and Electro-Mechanical) parts.
  • Radiation characterization of electronic components & materials.
  • Qualification of electronic, mechanical, chemical and thermal fabrication processes.
  • Characterization of electronic & mechanical fabrication materials.
  • Acceptance Inspection/Testing of Printed Circuit Boards and solar panels
  • Space quality electronic fabrication training and certification
  • Contamination Control on Spacecraft being realized
  • Failure analysis of electronic components & mechanical parts.
  • Fabrication, testing, screening of Hybrid Micro Circuits and Microwave Integrated Circuits
  • Quality Assurance of procurement and use of special components


Design Assurance

  • Margin demonstration by analysis (Structure Thermal and Mechanism analysis using mathematical models)
  • Reliability Analysis ( WCCA, De-rating, FMEA, FMECA, FTA)
  • Design Review ( DDRC, CDR)
  • Validation by tests and correlation with analysis

Subsystem Qualification & Certification

  • Electrical Functional Testing is to confirm that the design meets or exceeds the basic performance requirements
  • Mechanical & Thermal Environmental Testing to ensure that the design is capable of operating under the expected range of environments & to identify workmanship and process induced defects
  • Life Testing - to demonstrate that the wear out mechanism does not affect functionality for mission life period
  • Generate adequate test/calibration data base for subsequent use in actual mission operations

  • ISRO Software Process Document (ISPD), an implementation guide of IEEE/EIA:12207 software framework, is applicable to all software activities.

     

 


Nonconformance Management

A system is established to review the non-conformances observed during the course of fabrication, assembly and testing. Various review boards will review the non-conformances observed during different phases of fabrication, assembly and testing. The non-conformances at fabrication stage shall be referred to Material Review Board (MRB). The aspects related to Specifications, Test & Evaluation, Non-conformances and Configuration control during different stages of realization of the Spacecraft will be reviewed by the following review boards

  • Subsystem Review Board (SSRB)
  • System Review Board (SRB)
  • Emergency System Review Board (ESRB)
  • Configuration Control & Management Board (CCMB)
  • Software Configuration & Non-conformance Control Board for Onboard Software
